Better Business Cases Course

The purpose of the Better Business Cases (BBC) methodology is to deliver an objective and consistent analysis using a best practice model based on the ‘Five Case Model’. Developed by the UK Government and now adopted by NZ Treasury, the method is being used by state sector organisations, local government, District Health Boards and the private sector.

Course Objectives

Fundamental to the Five Case Model are the principles of:

  • Quality analysis
  • Thinking not writing
  • Effort is adjusted for the size and complexity of the initiative
  • No surprises
  • Governance and ownership
  • Alignment with management processes

Key Topics

The framework includes the following levels of analysis:

  • The Strategic Case demonstrates that the proposal is strategically aligned and is supported by a compelling case for change
  • The Economic Case ensures that a wide range of investment options have been evaluated and that the preferred option optimises value for money
  • The Commercial Case ensures that any proposed procurement is commercially attractive and viable
  • The Financial Case demonstrates that the preferred solution is affordable and can be funded
  • The Management Case provides assurance that processes and capabilities are in place to ensure that the preferred solution can be successfully delivered.
